Mark Meuser here. For months, we’ve been asking: Who paid to draw California’s new Gavin-mandered Prop 50 maps?
Based on campaign disclosure filings released last week, now we know: Nancy Pelosi and the Congressional Democrats. Pelosi’s Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee paid Paul Mitchell of Redistricting Partners to draw the proposed Gavin-mandered maps.
No one should be surprised. Back in 2010, Pelosi and her allies were the first to bankroll the effort to kill California’s independent redistricting commission. They hated losing control. Incumbents gonna incumbent.
Don’t buy Newsom’s “temporary” spin. Congressional Democrats despise the independent commission because it stops them from rigging the lines. They fought it tooth-and-nail in 2010, and Prop 50 is just Step 1 in their plan to claw back power.
Give them an inch (or a map) and they’ll take a mile. Once they control the process again, it’ll never end.
As economist Milton Friedman said, “Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program.”
Prop 50 isn’t about fairness, it’s about permanent political control. Follow the money, and it leads straight back to Nancy Pelosi’s playbook.
